And I've almost grown into it.they got me a medium and it's a bit bulky for me through the chest and torso, but that isn't a knock on the sizing. When my grandparents got it for me, they got me a men's medium, which was huge for me at the time, but they knew I would grow into it. While the fleece is not as fuzzy as it used to be, it still performs the way it always has, and the buttons still work great. There are no fraying ends or splitting seams, and the color has not faded. The fact that it even survived my teenage years is pretty remarkable. I've used this fleece pretty hard since I wore it. They called it Synchilla, as in “synthetic chinchilla.” By 1981, Mills was collaborating with a relatively unknown company named Patagonia to introduce this first-generation fleece to the outdoor market. The result was super soft, insulated well and didn’t hold water. In the late 1970s, Malden Mills began experimenting with polyesters, eventually discovering that a superfine yarn could be woven into a dense fabric, then brushed. So, what is Synchilla? To explain, we have to go back to the beginning. Each Synchilla fleece contains the fur of 5-7 Synchillas, depending on garment size. After growing fat on the scrubby, native vegetation that clings to life in this region, each Synchilla is sustainably harvested by indigenous hunter-gatherers for processing into Patagonia Synchilla fleece jackets. We often get the question from Patagonia fans: “What is Synchilla?”ĭeep in Chilean Patagonia, on a single, remote ridge in the foothills of the Andes mountain range, in the shadow of the volcano Tinguiririca, the Patagonia Synchilla roams free.
